Scrubs star Zach Braff has revealed that Homeland star Mandy Patinkin has joined the cast of his new movie.

Braff tweeted a picture of himself with The Princess Bride actor, saying: "One of my favourite actors of all time joins the cast of Wish I Was Here: Mandy Patinkin will play my father. [sic]"

The 38-year-old worked hard to raise funds for the film and raised over $2million thanks to over 38,000 backers versus the usual route of looking for a handful of financers.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, he said: "I never talked to studios. I didn't want to make it with studios.

"Since Garden State, I've had so much experience of that being a nightmare.

"I just thought I had nothing to lose. I thought, 'I know I have this loyal fan base. I know they want me to make another movie. I know they want me to be totally in charge of it.

"'I know that it will take some explaining because there are people who don't understand how the business works and will be confused.' "

He added: "Financing an independent film the traditional way often means having to give away your right to 'the final cut', casting choices, location choices and cutting down your script to make it shoot-able on the cheapest budget possible."

Braff will play the lead in the film which he wrote with his brother Adam and it tells the story of struggling actor and family man Aidan Bloom, who fantasises about becoming his childhood sci-fi hero.
