Colin Farrell has signed on to star on the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks film, which follows the battle between Walt Disney and P.L. Travers for the rights to the Mary Poppins book.

Farrell (36) will play Mr. Banks, Travers’ father, who inspired the fictional, strict father character in the classic story and film adaptation.

The film project is being produced by Disney, with an all-star cast signed on to play the various parts. Tom Hanks will depict Walt Disney, while Emma Thompson will play writer P.L. Travers.

Shifting between the 1960s and 1907, the film will document the 14-year battle between the two parties for the rights to the story, which was first published in 1934 and was turned into a musical film in 1964, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

Travers expressed huge discontent at the screen treatment of her work, particularly the animation sequences.

The project will begin shooting later this year, with John Lee Hancock directing.
