The heat is on
Wednesday 25 January 2012How is Geoff coping with new landlord Dan (who is also Fiona's father) at Raw?
Geoff respects Dan and he understands what he is trying to do but Geoff is a control freak, so he will listen to some of the things Dan says, but I don't necessarily think any of it will go through. He is polite and says thank you, but I don't think he will implement any of it in a hurry.
How is Geoff going to deal with JoJo's continued bad behaviour?
Well I think it is hard for Geoff, as he went through it himself in the last season: he was working too much and he has been on the medication. He knows the effect it had on everyone else and it is bringing up all sorts of memories for him, so JoJo's mess is the last thing he needs to be dealing with.
Could her job be on the line if she doesn't pull herself together?
That is always a risk because of the way she is behaving - she has had a lot of warnings. It is up to her to sort herself out and if she doesn't, then yes, I think there'll be consequences for her.
Geoff has really taken Philip under his wing; what is it about him that he likes?
Philip has a very special place in Geoff's heart. He is such a sweet, talented boy and I think Geoff would have liked to be like him at that age, but he wasn't given the right direction, so I think Geoff is going to do everything he can to make sure Philip has all the best opportunities.
Will Philip turn to Geoff for help with the problems he is having with his family?
There is definitely an older brother relationship that is starting to evolve and I think Geoff really loves that because he has been through a lot himself and has really grown up. He is finally in a position where he can offer advice and help people because he has been on a journey himself.
It seems that Geoff has got over his own ego to help people like Philip?
I think it is a natural development. I went through it myself as well. You just start to look at your life and the the effects that the decisions you are making are having on people. You start to wise up and become more aware of respecting and being kinder and loving towards people; in the end you are only hurting yourself when you treat people horribly.
Fiona has been giving Emma quite a tough time, but she seems to be impressing Geoff?
Geoff judges people on their work ethic and Emma has the drive. On paper, she is the boss's sister and the landlord's daughter and Geoff has been made to give her a job. But she has a bit of wit to her, she is a bit cheeky and she gets the job done and she works hard. In terms of Geoff's reality, that ticks all the boxes; she is a great member of staff as far as he is concerned.
It's obvious the Selena knows a secret about Geoff's past that people are going to be shocked to discover - tell us about Geoff and Selena's relationship?
Well Selena is one of those friends who represents a certain era of our lives and sometimes you want to have grown up and moved on. When you are reminded of it you don't want to be that way anywhere. She reminds Geoff of the person he was in his early 20s - a pretty wild and reckless man hitting all the gay clubs with his best girlfriend and getting up to all kinds of debauchery. I think he is a bit embarrassed about it while she is quite happy to tell anyone who will listen. He is very protective about his past life and would like it to stay in the past.
How is Geoff going to keep Selena in line?
Very carefully! She is a bit of a firecracker so he needs to keep her on side. No point in riling her up or she would be liable to blurt anything out.
What about Selena getting job in Raw?
Eh . . . that would need a lot of deep breaths!
Pavel is away at the moment but will be back soon; where is Geoff and Pavel's relationship at the moment?
I think it is the best it has ever been, they have been through so much. I think Geoff is much soppier and cuddlier and it's just great! I think this is the first season where there hasn't been some sort of pill-popping, crisis or bashing - everything is going along just nicely.
Will it remain that way for the rest of the series?
We'll have to see!
Can you sum up what life is like for Geoff in the second half of this season?
It's manipulation, gently trying to engineer the situation with Selena, especially when Pavel comes back. He needs to keep certain information from Pavel and make sure any information that he does get comes across in the right way. He also starts to really think about his future with Pavel and whether they are going to stay in Raw or move somewhere else. It is an exciting time and I think they are ready to take the next step in their relationship.
For you personally, is Raw something you would like to have in your future?
I don't know yet. You will see when you see the ending that it is interesting. It feels like a beautiful journey that is kind of about done now, but then another part of me really cherishes everything about the show and Ireland as well. So it is a tricky decision to make, because I have such a good time!

- The Real Mr & Mrs Assad: Channel 4 Dispatches
Channel 4 Dispatches reveals a portrait of a golden couple who have become global hate figures. The programme shows intimate footage of President Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma as they've never been seen on British television before, and images that help explain why the West bought the idea they were true modernisers. When Bashar took the reins of power after his father's death in 2000, the West was drawn into a hope and belief that Syria would be a new force for change in the Middle East. The Assads were seen as a glamorous couple with modern Western morals and values; he was hailed a reformer, she was the 'Rose of the Desert'. Key leaders and figures in the West welcomed the young couple, convinced that the softly spoken London-trained ophthalmologist and his beautiful British-born former investment banker wife would bring reform and modernisation to a country that had been run by an iron-fisted dictator for nearly 30 years. But it seems the West was duped. Instead of a transparent and progressive leadership, what has emerged during a year-long bloody uprising is evidence of the regime's gross systematic human rights abuses, including widespread killings and torture, while the Assads look on. Channel 4 Dispatches investigates the extent of the Assad family's culpability and the chains of command that link the President and select inner circle to the brutal crackdown.

- Afghanistan: The Great Game - A Personal View By Rory Stewart
Afghanistan: one of the most isolated and barren landscapes on earth is a strange place for an empire or superpower to invade. But for three of the greatest powers the world has seen, it became an unlikely target and an enduring obsession. In this two-part series, author, journalist and former Deputy Governor during the coalition's occupation of Iraq, Rory Stewart MP travels to Afghanistan to uncover the fears, the paranoia and perceived threats that led three very different Ssperpowers: Britain, Russia and the United States into Afghanistan from the 19th century to the present day.
