Irish among the Oscar nominees

Belfast-born Kenneth Branagh is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for My Week with Marilyn.
There is also Irish interest in the Best Short Film (Live Action) category with Peter McDonald and Eimear O'Kane's Pentecost and Terry George and Oorlagh George's Northern Ireland-set The Shore among the nominees.
Irish make-up artist Lynn Johnston is nominated in the Best Make Up category for Albert Nobbs.
Hugo leads the nominations with 11; The Artist is next with 10.
There was disappointment for Michael Fassbender, who was not among the nominees in the Best Actor category for his role in Shame.
The nominees for Best Actor are: Demián Bichir (A Better Life), George Clooney (The Descendants), Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Brad Pitt (Moneyball).
Glenn Close is nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Albert Nobbs which was filmed in Ireland last year and which the actress co-wrote with John Banville.
She will face tough competition from Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn), Viola Davis (The Help) and Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
Also shortlisted with Branagh in the Best Supporting Actor category are: Jonah Hill (Moneyball), Nick Nolte (Warrior), Christopher Plummer (Beginners) and Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close).
Reacting to his nomination, Branagh said: "It was a rare honour to play Sir Laurence Olivier. To be recognised by the Academy for doing so is overwhelming. I'm absolutely thrilled."
The Help's Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer will compete for the Best Supporting Actress award along with The Artist's Bérénice Bejo, Bridesmaids' Melissa McCarthy and Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs).
There are nine nominees in the Best Film category and they are: War Horse, The Artist, Moneyball, The Descendants, The Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris, The Help, Hugo and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
There are five nominees for Best Animated Feature and they are: A Cat in Paris, Chico and Rita, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots and Rango.
The Best Foreign Film nominees are: Bull Head (Belgium), Footnote (Israel), In Darkness (Poland), Monsieur Lazhar (Canada) and A Separation (Iran).
The nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay are: The Descendants (Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash), Hugo (John Logan), The Ides of March (George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon), Moneyball (Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin, Story by Stan Chervin), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan).
The nominees for Best Original Screenplay are: The Artist (Michel Hazanavicius), Bridesmaids (Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig), Margin Call (J.C. Chandor), Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen) and A Separation (Asghar Farhadi).
The 84th Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles' Kodak Theatre on Sunday February 26 2012.

Channel 4 Dispatches reveals a portrait of a golden couple who have become global hate figures. The programme shows intimate footage of President Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma as they've never been seen on British television before, and images that help explain why the West bought the idea they were true modernisers. When Bashar took the reins of power after his father's death in 2000, the West was drawn into a hope and belief that Syria would be a new force for change in the Middle East. The Assads were seen as a glamorous couple with modern Western morals and values; he was hailed a reformer, she was the 'Rose of the Desert'. Key leaders and figures in the West welcomed the young couple, convinced that the softly spoken London-trained ophthalmologist and his beautiful British-born former investment banker wife would bring reform and modernisation to a country that had been run by an iron-fisted dictator for nearly 30 years. But it seems the West was duped. Instead of a transparent and progressive leadership, what has emerged during a year-long bloody uprising is evidence of the regime's gross systematic human rights abuses, including widespread killings and torture, while the Assads look on.
