Book Review
Carte Blanche by Jeffrey Deaver
Sunday 17 July 2011Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Jeffrey Deaver, bestselling author of such crime novels as The Bone Collector, is the latest writer licenced to resurrect James Bond. With Carte Blanche, he has created a 007 for the Noughties, a tweeting social networker who uses the latest apps to nail his man or woman.
Bond, now a veteran of the war in Afghanistan is in his early 30s: an ageless icon who drives a Bentley Continental GT and carries a very smart smartphone. Otherwise, the vintage is the same with exotic locales, exotic drinks and exotic women. His nemesis is a billionaire rag-and-bone man whose lieutenant is a super efficient killer from Belfast. The well-plotted story devilishly twists and turns, with Deaver displaying the chops that has made him a multi-million seller even if he sometimes is trying too hard.
