Low hit another high

These Minnesota minimalists were dubbed slowcore at their inception at the height of grunge some twenty years ago. Naturally they hated the tag but Low's haunting mesh of glacial guitars and majestic walls of harmony have served them well. They've been covered by Robert Plant and this ninth album achieves a rare alchemy between sweetness and austerity. Aided by Steve Garrington on bass, organ and piano and the peerless Nels Cline of Wilco on guitar and lap steel, husband and wife team Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Roger continue to essay lovely choral rock music. The ponderous pace might frustrate newcomers to their distinctive sound but like great empty plains trembling in a heat haze nobody does beautiful desolation quite like Low.
