Anna Calvi - S/T
Wednesday 19 January 2011Label: Domino
Year: 2011
Duration: 39 minutes
From London, but with a sound that's more desert than Dulwich, Anna Calvi's album is one sensuous, sweaty record - it's hard to see anyone turning up the heat as much as her and Joan As Policewoman in 2011.
Calvi is a powerhouse singer with a distinctive Latin guitar style, and her production job with PJ Harvey drummer Rob Ellis crackles with live energy.
Throughout this debut there's the feeling of walking into some watering hole in a film noir and finding an amazing band in front of empty tables and a detective magazine-reading bartender.
Calvi plays the femme fatale to perfection - strong, vulnerable and filling each song with intrigue galore.
You'll make a great couple.
