Just another day on The Hills
Tuesday 27 July 2010We've watched them go from spoilt teenagers on Laguna Beach to equally pampered socialites on The Hills, but the sixth series of reality guilty pleasure The Hills continues to show us why this drama-filled season is the last.
Let's face it, The Hills hasn't been the same since Lauren strolled out of that church at Speidi's wedding and bid us an emotional farewell, at the end of the fifth series.
Over the years, we grew to love the strong woman's words of wisdom and genuine concern over her friend's partners, (sometimes a little bit too concerned) as she found her feet in LA.
She was the girl everyone could relate to - having had her heart broken more times than Audrina and Justin have 'been on a break', to losing her best friend to a crystal loving extremist. Give that girl a Chanel bag for not packing it in way before she did.
MTV's decision to bring Kristen Cavallari in as a replacement for the show's star was a bad move and probably spelt the end for the series. From the very first episode she appeared in, it was clear that this girl meant business (the is getting as much screen time to ensure her career as a Z list celebrity was secure). Her 'friends with benefits' relationship with Brody hasn't left her looking like the vixen I'm sure she'd hoped for. Instead it left the majority of the viewers loathing her casual approach to relationships. Even her fellow cast members were peeved at the vain couple's carry-on last night ("It's a love squeeze" Kristen giggled as she stroked Brody's neck).
In the latest episode, the four former enemies (Lo hated Steph and Audrina, then Audrina and Kristen fell out over Justin and Steph and Kristen came to blows over Kristen's 'drug problem') now seem to have gone full circle and are the best of friends, even going shopping together for Audrina's birthday present. We all knew the show was a little unbelievable, but could this series make it anymore obvious that it's all a farce?
Speaking of bizarre friendships, once credited as 'The Bartender' and now as 'Kristen's Friend', 'Stacy The Bartender' seems to have gone from random girl in a bar to a fully fledged member of the LA posse. Brought in to cause some friction between Spencer and Heidi, her acting obviously impressed the creators, as she is now a firm fixture on set whenever there's a drama fuelled night out, or Kristen needs to have an extremely staged moan about Brody's shenanigans the night before. Her presence is almost as irritating as surplus characters Charlie and Frankie (is it just me or does it always seem to be Frankie's birthday?).
Last night's episode saw the ending of the far-fetched relationship between Audrina and Ryan Cabrera (for some reason they all insist on calling him by his full name). 'Spike', as he is also known, was the latest effort by Audrina to get over her scruffy rocker ex (and Kristen's) Justin Bobby. As usual it failed and the girl was left looking like a shambolic mess as she continues to pine after the man who washes twice a year.
Of course the bible-bashing, plastic-surgery-loving couple have to get a mention. The once bubbly and entertaining Heidi met her downfall when she started dating Spencer (wouldn't you know it was Kristen who introduced them). At the beginning their absurd antics were comical viewing (watching Heidi throw that party for Enzo was bizarre to say the least), but as the show went on, and they were still being filmed, it became apparent that their behaviour wasn't just for the purpose of the cameras.
It was sad watching her transformation from average, likeable girl to a fame hungry Barbie-doll. Spencer has not changed and remains as chauvinistic as ever. The move to take them off the show was probably the best decision the producers made.
You've either watched it, heard about it or read about The Hills, but now it's time to let it go. But don't fret all you reality junkies out there, because spin off The City is just as juicy and surreal.
