In Bruges among the Oscar nominees

The Irish box office hit 'In Bruges' has been nominated for an Oscar for this year's Academy Awards.

The film's writer-director, Martin McDonagh, has been nominated in the Best Original Screenplay category.

McDonagh previously won the Best Short Film Oscar for 'Six Shooter'.

There is also Irish interest in the Best Live Action Short Film category, where Steph Green's 'New Boy' is among the nominees.

Among the films which received multiple nominations are: 'Slumdog Millionaire', 'Milk', 'The Reader', 'Frost/Nixon', 'The Dark Knight' and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'.

The nominees for Best Actor are: Richard Jenkins ('The Visitor'), Frank Langella ('Frost/Nixon'), Sean Penn ('Milk'), Brad Pitt ('The Curious Case of Benjamin Button') and Mickey Rourke ('The Wrestler').

Anne Hathaway ('Rachel Getting Married'), Angelina Jolie ('Changeling'), Melissa Leo ('Frozen River'), Meryl Streep ('Doubt') and Kate Winslet ('The Reader') are nominated in the Best Actress category.

The nominees for Best Picture are: 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', 'Frost/Nixon', 'Milk', 'The Reader' and 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

One of the producers of 'The Reader', Redmond Morris, is Irish.

Nominated for Best Supporting Actor are: Josh Brolin ('Milk'), Robert Downey Jr ('Tropic Thunder'), Phillip Seymour Hoffman ('Doubt'), Heath Ledger ('The Dark Knight') and Michael Shannon ('Revolutionary Road').

Contesting the category of Best Supporting Actress are: Amy Adams ('Doubt'), Penelope Cruz ('Vicky Cristina Barcelona'), Viola Davis ('Doubt'), Taraji P Henson ('The Curious Case of Benjamin Button') and Marissa Tomei ('The Wrestler').

The nominees for Best Director are: David Fincher ('The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'), Ron Howard ('Frost/Nixon'), Gus Van Sant ('Milk'), Stephen Daldry ('The Reader') and Danny Boyle ('Slumdog Millionaire').

The nominees for Best Foreign Language Film are: 'The Baader Meinhof Complex', 'The Class', 'Departures', 'Revanche' and 'Waltz with Bashir'.

'The Betrayal (Nerakhoon)', 'Encounters at the End of the World', 'The Garden', 'Man on Wire' and 'Trouble the Water' are the nominees for Best Documentary Feature.

The nominees for Best Animated Film are: 'Bolt', 'WALL-E' and 'Kung Fu Panda'.

Joining McDonagh in the Best Original Screenplay category are: Courtney Hunt for 'Frozen River', Mike Leigh for 'Happy-Go-Lucky', Dustin Lance Black for 'Milk' and Andrew Stanton, Jim Reardon and Pete Docter for 'WALL-E'.

The Best Adapted Screenplay nominees are: Eric Roth and Robin Swicord for 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', John Patrick Shanley for 'Doubt', Peter Morgan for 'Frost/Nixon', David Hare for 'The Reader' and Simon Beaufoy for 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

    Vernon Kay: back for more Family Fortunes

    The classic family game show that stretches all the way back to the '70s returns for another run, starting off with teams consisting of TV presenter Carol Vorderman and her family playing astrologer (and Strictly Come Dancing contestant) Russell Grant and his family. Hosted by Vernon Kay, both celebrities and their families go head to head for the big money, and the chance to win up to a five-figure sum for the charity of their choice.

  • - Casualty
    Casualty: another busy night at Holby General

    9.20pm, BBC ONE

    Plenty of high drama at Holby General's A&E department as Zoe tries to convince Sam to sit down and talk to Keith Parr before he brings an action against Sam and the hospital. A troubled woman is brought into the ED after being hit by a lorry and Lloyd is quick to jump to conclusions about the driver. Meanwhile Linda has a chance to examine her feelings when Lenny tackles her about putting her niece and nephew into care.
