Clooney nominated for Tipperary Peace Prize

The actor was nominated for the award by the public. Other nominees include Cardinal Sean Brady; Northern Ireland First Minister Rev Ian Paisley; Niall Mellon of the Niall Mellon Township Trust; former Taoiseach Dr Garrett Fitzgerald; Iranian lawyer and former Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ibadi; Indian spiritual teacher Sri Sri Ravi Shankar; and Suzanne Mubarak.
Clooney has long campaigned for help for the people of Darfur and last year spoke in front of the UN Security Council demanding aid for Darfur.
He has also travelled to countries such as Sudan, Egypt, Chad and China to campaign on the issue.
The Tipperary Peace Convention committee will adjudicate on the nominations and select the winner in early 2008.
Previous winners of the prize, which recognises people that promote peace in Ireland and abroad, include Bob Geldof, Mikhail Gorbachev and the New York Fire Department following the 9/11 attacks.
