Róisín Murphy - Overpowered
Tuesday 20 November 2007Label: EMI
Year: 2007
Duration: 55 minutes
Few are the albums that could be played start to finish and still fill a dancefloor, but with 'Overpowered' Murphy has gained access to that VIP area.
Two years on from her post-Moloko debut 'Ruby Blue', she's teamed up with Groove Armada's Andy Cato, Philly legend Larry Gold, Richard X and other luminaries for a record as full of energy as it is invention.
Referencing different decades with her sound, Murphy remains as alluring no matter what the pace or power of the electronics.
While heavy on studio trickery, Murphy has the songs to justify it. And having been so successful here, it would be fascinating if the machines were switched off and we heard that voice with just a piano for company. In the meantime, there's a lot here for others to be jealous of.
