Speaking at her Beverly Hills home in her pyjamas with her husband Jordan Bratman and her dogs, the chart-topper said she had only one New Year's resolution for 2008.

"That'll be about the time I enter into mommyhood, so" she whispered, "I'm hoping to have started a beautiful family with my husband!"

The Beautiful singer, who lives in the mansion sold to her by Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, told Glamour magazine that music executive Bratman, 30, was ecstatic. "Oh, he's thrilled!, he's just great", she said.

"He's so supportive and amazing through everything. He came with me on the last leg of the tour and he was my support system...I gush. I'm a lucky girl."

The Dirrty star said she wanted to be a working mother. She told the magazine: "I want to get it right, to balance that well with my career."

The 5ft 2in singer added: "When you get married and have a team mate in life, you don't have time for the people around you that are just going to weigh you down. I'm all about peace and keeping people that are honest and loving in my life."

In the interview, Aguilera, who began performing in the Mickey Mouse club with Britney Spears, reflected on why she had not gone down the self-destructive route of some of her contemporaries.

She told Glamour: "When you hit 20 or 21 and you're around drugs and alcohol, everyone has a moment when they like to dabble in it and express themselves. It's called being young but there is a boundary. You see all of these horror stories about people that have died of drug overdoses, people that have taken it too far and ruined their lives, and for me, I had so many things that I had yet to accomplish.

"It was just a matter of thinking, I don't want to waste any time, and sticking to the plan."

Spears gave a less than impressive performance at her MTV comeback show after spending the night partying with P Diddy. Aguilera said: "Everyone has their own ways of choosing what's best for them.

"I have no problem with telling someone, 'Hey, I have to do a show tomorrow - you can relate to this as an artist, I want to do a good job and be on my game'."

She said: "Sometimes I wish I could go out to a party or a club and just be able to be free, but there's a consequence with the temptation. You know you'll feel it the next day when you wake up. There are too many things I have to accomplish."

Aguilera said she had no regrets about her controversial raunchy Dirrty video, in which she stripped down to just a pair of tiny hotpants. "I definitely stirred the pot a bit but I had fun" she said. "If it's under the mark of respectability then it's prudish, if it's over the mark, it's slutty.

"That's really unfair, so I'm happy I've been able to express myself and be on both sides. People have loved it, hated it, been undecided, and been empowered by it."

Aguilera married Bratman in 2005 after they met in 2002 when the music executive worked for her management company.

  • - The Real Mr & Mrs Assad: Channel 4 Dispatches

    Channel 4, 8.00pm

Channel 4 Dispatches reveals a portrait of a golden couple who have become global hate figures. The programme shows intimate footage of President Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma as they've never been seen on British television before, and images that help explain why the West bought the idea they were true modernisers. When Bashar took the reins of power after his father's death in 2000, the West was drawn into a hope and belief that Syria would be a new force for change in the Middle East. The Assads were seen as a glamorous couple with modern Western morals and values; he was hailed a reformer, she was the 'Rose of the Desert'. Key leaders and figures in the West welcomed the young couple, convinced that the softly spoken London-trained ophthalmologist and his beautiful British-born former investment banker wife would bring reform and modernisation to a country that had been run by an iron-fisted dictator for nearly 30 years. But it seems the West was duped. Instead of a transparent and progressive leadership, what has emerged during a year-long bloody uprising is evidence of the regime's gross systematic human rights abuses, including widespread killings and torture, while the Assads look on. Channel 4 Dispatches investigates the extent of the Assad family's culpability and the chains of command that link the President and select inner circle to the brutal crackdown.
