According to reports, the captain of the plane requested that police investigate after cabin crew became suspicious of a passenger who had spent an unusually long amount of time in the bathroom.

A spokesperson for airline company easyJet said that flight attendants then searched the bathroom. "When they searched it they found a syringe hidden in a bin and covered in blood," the spokesperson said.

Police confirmed that they did not find any illegal substances on board the plane when it was searched.

However, reports said that they had discovered a container with heroin substitute methadone in it, which Doherty is reported to be taking as part of a drugs rehabilitation programme.

A spokesperson for the airline said that passengers who are carrying a syringe for medical reasons are required to make this known to airline staff before boarding the plane.

"You simply cannot take syringes on an aircraft without permission and cause a potential hazard to other passengers," the spokesperson said.

The airline company also confirmed that Doherty would be banned from taking easyJet flights in the future.

The singer was travelling to Barcelona for the Primavera Sound Festival.
