Joyce manuscripts at National Library
Thursday 2 March 2006Literary experts say the acquisition, which cost €1.17m, is hugely significant.
It is the library's third major acquisition of Joyce manuscripts since 2000 after the purchases of the Léon documents in 2002 and a Ulysses manuscript in 2000.
The latest documents, which consist of six sheets, went on display at the National Library last night for the closing days of their 'James Joyce and Ulysses' exhibition.
Four of the manuscript pages are written in the hand of Joyce's wife, Nora Barnacle.
All pages contain subsequent corrections and alterations by Joyce, indicating a joint effort between Joyce and Barnacle which has not been documented before.
They were written between April and August 1923 and document the initial stages of what would become 'Finnegans Wake'.
The acquisition was funded by AIB under the Tax Credit Scheme.
The 'James Joyce and Ulysses' exhibition runs until Friday 10 March. Next week Joyce expert Dr Luca Crispi will give free lunchtime talks at the exhibition.
