Hornby and Rushdie were shortlisted for 'A Long Way Down' and 'Shalimar The Clown' respectively, along with Ali Smith's 'The Accidental' and Chris Wilson's 'The Ballad of Lee Cotton'.

The shortlists of the other four categories - Best First Novel, Biography, Poetry, and Children's Book - include Johannesburg-born Rachel Zadok, former postman Alexander Masters and Irish-based children's writer Kate Thompson.

"Our shortlist may confuse the book trade," said head judge, Philippa Gregory. "We are not saying these are the only good books. They are books which happened to resonate powerfully with the judges of the moment."

The winners of each of the categories will be announced in London on 4 January 2006 with the announcement of the overall winner of the £30,000 prize, chosen from the five winners, following on 24 January.

Last year's winner was Andrea Levy with 'Small Island'.
