Man pleads not guilty in Letterman case
Wednesday 23 March 2005Kelly Frank, 53, a painter who had been hired do to work on Letterman's ranch, was arrested last week after an acquaintance told police he had planned to kidnap Letterman's son, Harry and the child's nanny.
The acquaintance said Mr Frank talked about holding the two for 48 hours in the belief that he could extort $5m from Letterman. He had a key to Letterman's house and even knew where the child slept.
Mr Frank's lawyer said his client admitted "there were discussions about it, but with no purpose of carrying it out". He called it a "lighthearted conversation".
Mr Frank faces charges of solicitation, theft and obstructing a police officer. He could be jailed for at least 10 years if convicted.
The judge ordered him to remain jailed on bail pending his next court appearance on 5 April.
