Courtney Love escapes jail sentence

The singer pleaded no contest to a misdemeanour assault for an attack on a woman at the Los Angeles home of an ex-boyfriend in April 2004. The charge had originally been for felony assault.
In the second case, Love pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing a forged prescription and the drug oxycodone, found in her home in October 2003. The charge had originally been two counts of felony drug possession.
The singer was sentenced to 18 months probation for these offences, and ordered to continue with a drug rehabilitation programme. Love was also ordered to attend anger management counselling.
Love's lawyer, Howard Weitzman, said after yesterday's hearings that the singer had "turned her life around" and that she was now "clean and sober". He also said that the singer was now back writing and performing music with her band. Love did not appear in court yesterday.
