Return of the King tops Oscar list
Tuesday 27 January 2004'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World', 'Mystic River' and 'Seabiscuit' have also received numerous nominations.
All four films have been nominated in the Best Picture category, along with 'Lost in Translation'.
As expected, Bill Murray has received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in 'Lost in Translation' with Charlize Theron nominated in the Best Actress category for 'Monster'.
The other nominees for Best Actor are: Johnny Depp ('Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl'), Ben Kingsley ('House of Sand and Fog'), Jude Law ('Cold Mountain') and Sean Penn ('Mystic River').
The Best Actress shortlist includes: Keisha Castle-Hughes ('Whale Rider'), Diane Keaton ('Something's Gotta Give'), Samantha Morton ('In America') and Naomi Watts ('21 Grams').
The nominations for Best Supporting Actor are: Alec Baldwin ('The Cooler'), Benicio Del Toro ('21 Grams'), Djimon Hounsou ('In America'), Tim Robbins ('Mystic River') and Ken Watanabe ('The Last Samurai').
Shohreh Aghdashloo ('House of Sand and Fog'), Patricia Clarkson ('Pieces of April'), Marcia Gay Harden ('Mystic River'), Holly Hunter ('Thirteen') and Renee Zellweger ('Cold Mountain') have been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Shortlisted for Best Director are: Sofia Coppola ('Lost in Translation'), Clint Eastwood ('Mystic River'), Peter Jackson ('The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King'), Fernando Meirelles ('City of God') and Peter Weir ('Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World').
'The Barbarian Invasions', 'Dirty Pretty Things', 'Finding Nemo', 'In America' and 'Lost in Translation' have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
The films nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay are: 'American Splendor', 'City of God', 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King', 'Mystic River and 'Seabiscuit'.
'The Barbarian Invasions' (Canada), 'Evil' (Sweden), 'The Twilight Samurai' (Japan), 'Twin Sisters' (the Netherlands) and 'Zelary' (Czech Republic) are the nominees for Best Foreign Film.
The awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on 29 February.
