Golden Globe nominations announced
Thursday 19 December 2002The awards ceremony, viewed as an indicator of possible Oscar winners, takes place on 19 January.
Musical 'Chicago' leads with eight nominations, including Best Actor (Richard Gere), Best Actress (Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger) and Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy categories.
It was followed by Nicole Kidman's new film 'The Hours', which makes the shortlist in seven categories.
Both Kidman and her 'Hours' co-star Meryl Streep are in the running for the Best Actress (Drama) award with the film also nominated for Best Director and Best Picture (Drama).
The other Best Actress nominees in the Drama category are: Salma Hayek ('Frida'), Diane Lane ('Unfaithful') and Julianne Moore ('Far From Heaven').
'Gangs of New York' star Daniel Day-Lewis faces competition from Jack Nicholson ('About Schmidt'), Michael Caine ('The Quiet American'), Leonardo DiCaprio ('Catch Me If You Can') and Adrien Brody ('The Pianist') for the Best Actor (Drama) award.
Day-Lewis' 'Gangs' co-star Cameron Diaz has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress while Paul Newman makes the Supporting Actor shortlist for 'Road to Perdition'.
'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' has been named in the Best Director and Best Picture (Drama) categories.
In the TV section, 'Friends', 'The Sopranos', 'The West Wing', 'Sex and the City', '24' and 'Six Feet Under' dominate the various categories.
