AFI honours Lord of the Rings
Monday 7 January 2002Peter Jackson's film also won in the Production Designer and Digital Artist categories.
Winning the Film of the Year award means that 'Lord of the Rings' should receive a Best Picture nomination when the Oscars shortlist is announced next month.
Other winners at the inaugural AFI ceremony included Denzel Washington, who won the actor award for 'Training Day' and Sissy Spacek, who won the actress award for 'In the Bedroom'.
Gene Hackman was named Featured Actor of the Year for his performance in 'The Royal Tenenbaums', while Jennifer Connelly was Featured Actress of the Year for 'A Beautiful Mind'.
Robert Altman took home Director of the Year for 'Gosford Park', Christopher Nolan won the screenwriting award for his film 'Memento' and Craig Armstrong won Composer of the Year for his work on 'Moulin Rouge'.
There was a hat trick of awards for mob series 'The Sopranos' in the TV categories, with the show named Drama Series of the Year and its stars, James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, winning the Series Actor and Actress awards.
