Moretti wins Palme d'Or
Monday 21 May 2001It is the first time an Italian film had taken the top prize honours at Europe's premier film competition since 1978.
Cult movie-maker David Lynch was named Best Director for his film 'Mulholland Drive'.
He shared the award with fellow American directors Joel and Ethan Coen for their latest offering, 'The Man Who Wasn't There'.
The other big winner of the night was Austrian director Michael Haneke's controversial film about voyeurism and masochism, 'The Piano Teacher', which picked up three prizes, including the Best Actress award for Isabelle Huppert.

Golf is one sport that looks amazing on TV, so here's another treat for couch potatoes. Hazel Irvine presents live coverage of the fourth and final round at Wentworth. Last year's final day culminated in a dramatic play-off between Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, and it was the former who emerged victorious to take the world number one spot off his compatriot. With so many Europeans dominating the top of the World rankings, viewers can expect a tight contest (and maybe an Irish win).
