Ice Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky accepted the blame for Canada's shock Olympic Games exit yesterday after his country's worst performance in the tournament for 26 years.
Canada, the defending champions, were knocked out 2-0 by Russia in the quarter-finals after losing twice in the preliminary round and scoring just nine times in six games.
"I take full responsibility," said Gretzky, the team's executive director.
"It's nobody else's fault. I will reassess what's best for me and for Hockey Canada. I want to win gold at the Vancouver Games in 2010.
Gretzky came into the tournament under a cloud with his name linked to an illegal betting ring. He has denied all allegations of wrong-doing.
