Dale Begg-Smith won the men's freestyle skiing moguls on Wednesday to give sun-blessed Australia only their third ever Winter Olympics gold medal.

The Canadian-born 21-year-old, already a multi-millionaire internet entrepreneur, was on top in the qualifying round and carried that form into the final where, starting last, he coolly held his nerve to take victory.

Begg-Smith joins Alisa Camplin, the defending women's aerial champion, and 2002 speed skating champion Steven Bradbury as Australia's only winter Games gold medallists. He finished with a score of 26.77 ahead of the Finn who had 26.62 with Dawson settling for 26.30.
