Gold for McDonald in 400m Freestyle S6

Ireland's Darragh McDonald claimed a gold medal in the 400m Freestyle S6 on the first day of the IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal.

McDonald clocked a time of 5:19.23 to finish some 18 seconds ahead of Colombian Nelson Crispin.

Elsewhere, Bethany Firth has reached the final of the S14 200m Freestyle event.

17-year-old Firth, who won 2012 Paralympic gold in the S14 100m backstroke, clocked a time of 2:13.78 en route to winning heat two in Canada.

That was the second fastest heat time and qualifies her for the final, which will take place at 01:32 Irish time on Tuesday morning.

Earlier on Monday, Firth's compatriot Ellen Keane was eliminated from the S9 100m freestyle heats, she finished fifth in her heat in a time of 1:08.57.
