Shaun Murphy came through a gripping first-round clash with Martin Gould in the World Open in Haikou, China today, eventually prevailing 5-4.
Playing against a man he has never lost to, Murphy was never in complete control but managed to get over the line and secure a meeting against either Matthew Stevens or Dave Gilbert.
Mark Allen was also in action this morning but the world number nine had an easier time of it, getting past Ryan Day 5-2.
In the last remaining wildcard matches, Ian Burns saw off Saleh Mohammadi 5-1 and Andrew Higginson was beaten by the same scoreline against Zhaon Xintong.
World number one Judd Trump is playing in the later session against Mark Joyce, while Graeme Dott and Neil Robertson are also on the table.
