Schmidt expects Ireland decision next week

Joe Schmidt expects to have a decision on whether or not he will be the next Ireland head coach by the end of next week.

The two-time Heineken Cup-winning Leinster coach was on Friday’s Late Late Show to speak about his nine-year-old son Luke’s epilepsy.

He was interviewed by the IRFU this week and, towards the end of the interview, was asked about where things stand.

At least two other candidates, thought to be current Ireland attack coach Les Kiss and Queensland Reds head coach Ewen McKenzie, are also understood to be in the running.

Schmidt admitted that the change from a provincial job to the sporadically intense schedule at Test level was potentially an attractive aspect of taking on the Ireland job.

But the New Zealander also hinted that he has not always seen eye-to-eye with the union.

Asked about the interview, he said: “We had a really good chat. To be honest they know me pretty well and I know them pretty well.

"We probably know each other too well and neither of us are sure about it. But whoever gets the job, it’s a super job.”

“With a national team when the team are in camp it’s very, very busy but it would give me a little bit of flexible time and available time to help and support Luke and certainly my wife in looking after him.”

Schmidt, who reiterated his commitment to Leinster, who are in contention for the Rabo Pro12 and Amlin Challenge Cup, expects to hear from the IRFU soon.

“I think toward the end of next week. I know it won’t be long because for me I made a commitment to Leinster and I did say to them that I was fully committed to that and prepared to continue with that but they have encouraged me to at least engage in the conversations and we’ll see what comes of it.”
