Eventing: Aoife Clark finishes seventh

Ireland’s Aoife Clark finished seventh in the Equestrian Individual Jumping event, after leading the competition for a long spell.

Germany's Michael Jung rode a controlled and flawless final round to take the gold, while team-mate Sandra Auffarth nabbed the bronze. Sara Algotsson Ostholt of Sweden took the silver.

Jung is now the first person ever to hold the European, world and Olympic titles simultaneously.

Kildare rider Clark had earlier helped Ireland to a fifth-placed finish in the Three Day Team event and went into the individual jumping in 12th place with 52.50 points.

Aboard her horse Master Crusoe, she claimed a hugely impressive double clear round and shot to the top of the leaderboard with 17 of the 25 competitors having already riden.

However, while Clark was able to hold off the likes of Zara Phillips, she was eventually overhauled and had to settle for a very credible seventh place.

Mullingar's Joseph Murphy with the 11 year-old Electric Cruise also went clear in the individual final, finishing 14th overall, while Wicklow's Mark Kyle and Coolio had four faults to complete the afternoon in 21st place.

The Irish team, which included Camilla Speirs and Michael Ryan, both eliminated after falls on the cross country course yesterday, claimed an historic fifth place finish in the Eventing team competition.
