Irish rider Eugene Laverty came out on top in the second race of the day at Monza as he closed the gap on team-mate and World Superbike Championship leader Sylvain Guintoli.

Laverty had led the day's first race but finished third after being overtaken by eventual winner Marco Melandri, with the BMW Motorrad rider passing Laverty and Tom Sykes on the final lap.

Championship leader Guintoli finished fourth in that race and had to settle for a place below the podium spots following the second outing.

Melandri finished just behind Laverty in race two, clocking the fastest time on his final lap to keep the pressure on the Irishman until the very end.

Sykes had an eventful day after missing out on victory in race one by just 0.085 seconds and taking third second time around.

The results mean Guintoli's lead at the top of the overall rider's standings is now just 13 points from team-mate Laverty, with Sykes a further five points behind.

Melandri's strong performance in front of his home crowd leaves him fourth in the standings on 96 points.
