Cavan’s Paul Brady won his tenth title and ninth in a row in the GAA Handball O’Neills All-Ireland 40x20 Senior Singles Final at a packed venue in Abbeylara.
Brady who has dominated the 40x20 code for the last decade may not have been at his brilliant best at all stages but he still had more than enough to see off a determined challenge from Westmeath’s Robbie McCarthy.
McCarthy started the brighter and seemed to catch Brady cold as he raced into a 6-1 lead, however, Brady refused to panic and reeled off four in a row to bring the score back to 6-5. From there the Cavan man took over and despite a determined fight from McCarthy, there was no stopping Brady as he showed his class to reel off point after point and take the game 21-6.
The second game was a much closer affair with both players trading points with excellent serving and kill shots.
Brady took command of the game at two different stages but McCarthy fought back both times leaving the huge crowd on the edge of their seats.
Leading 20-14, but with McCarthy serving and eating into his lead, Brady pulled a great pass shot out of the bag to give him the chance for game and match ball. He duly obliged and wrapped up a 21-6 21-14 victory to the delight of the large crowd present.
In his speech, Brady admitted he was delighted to finally reach his goal of ten All-Ireland titles and thanked everyone for their support throughout the years.
Brady said: “I’m delighted to finally achieve my goal of ten titles, I have put so much into winning these titles over the last 11 years, I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me over the years”
In today’s first game in Abbeylara, Clare’s Colin Crehan overcame the challenge of Wexford’s Galen Riordan to take the Minor Singles crown on a 21-13 21-11 scoreline.
