Cork’s Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan will defend his WBO International Middleweight title against unbeaten UK middleweight Billy Joe Saunders at Wembley on 20 July.

O’Sullivan is relishing the chance to step into the ring with top class opposition, saying: “I’ve been trying to get top fights against unbeaten opposition for a while and I knew that it was only a matter of time till I got to show what I can do on a big night like this.

“I was ready to defend my title against Joe Selkirk in Liverpool last month when he pulled out and then the event was cancelled, so getting the chance to fight an unbeaten opponent at Wembley is just what I want.”

Saunders currently holds the British and Commonwealth middleweight titles and remains unbeaten after 19 professional outings.

O’Sullivan has a similarly impressive record of 16 wins from 16 fights, and he and his management expect the winner of this fight to go on to challenge for a world title.

O’Sullivan said: “I feel that I’m ready to go in at the top level now and if I can finally prove myself against an unbeaten opponent like Billy Joe then there’s no reason why we can’t start looking at Peter Quillin and the WBO world middleweight title. I know that I’m ready.”

O’Sullivan and Saunders fight for O’Sullivan’s WBO title as the co-main event on a night that will see UK heavyweight Dereck Chisora clash with unbeaten American Malik Scott, with IBF Intercontinental Super-Bantamweight champion Carl Frampton and super-flyweight ace Paul Butler fighting as well.
