Ireland’s Elite boxers recorded five wins from six at the Usti nad Labem Grand Prix in the Czech Republic on Wednesday.
Paddy Barnes, Sean McComb and Tommy McCarthy registered a Belfast hat-trick with decisions over Hungary’s Norbert Kalucza, China’s Lui Xiaohu and Lithuania’s Eugenijus Tutkus respectively, with McCarthy advancing on a countback.
Barnes, who has moved up from light-flyweight to flyweight for the 44th edition of the tournament, encountered little problems versus Kalucza.
But his fellow London 2012 bronze medalist Michael Conlan, who has moved up from flyweight to bantamweight for the Grand Prix, bowed out to London 2012 flyweight silver medallist Nyambayar Tugstsogt, who claimed silver for Mongolia at the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan.
Elsewhere at the 16-nation tournament, McComb won all three rounds against China’s Liu Xiaohu, while Ross Hickey and Jason Quigley recorded landslide verdicts over the Czech Republic pair of Zan Korec and Vit Kral.
Hickey led 24-5 heading into the final three minutes and European U-23 champion Quigley was 12-4 up when he answered the bell for the start of the third.
