Spanish top seed David Ferrer secured his sixth ATP Tour title of the season as he saw off Alexandr Dolgopolov to win the Valencia Open.

The world number five was the firm favourite in the showdown with Ukrainian Dolgopolov and took the title with a 6-1 3-6 6-4 win.

Ferrer had tasted success in Valencia in 2008 and 2010 but, after dropping the second set in his semi-final against Croatian qualifier Ivan Dodig, he would have been feeling the pressure as Dolgopolov also staged a fightback in the final.

However, the 30-year-old kept his cool to win the deciding set in front of his home support.
