Williams' second-round victory was never in doubt

Top seed Maria Sharapova overcame a second-set wobble to beat Tsvetana Pironkova 7-6 6-7 6-0 and reach the Wimbledon third round.

The match was halted on Wednesday evening with the Russian leading 3-1 in the second set but she lost the first two games to allow Bulgarian Pironkova, a way back

Sharapova double-faulted three times in the tiebreak on the way to losing it 7-3. However, she regrouped and roared through the third set in 29 minutes to set up a match against Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei.

Serena Williams wasted little time in progressing to round three as she blasted her way past Hungary's Melinda Czink on Centre Court.

The 30-year-old did not look quite at her best when she saw off Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the first round, but was much more clinical on Thursday to clinch a 6-1 6-4 win.

Williams fired down seven aces on the way to wrapping up the first set in 19 minutes and despite an improved performance from Czink in the second set, the four-times Wimbledon champion eased through to set up a match with China's Jie Zheng.
