Conor Niland is just one victory away from qualifying for his second Grand Slam event in a row after he progressed to the third and final qualifying round at the US Open in New York.
Niland defeated Tsung-Hua Yang from Taiwan and faces Matwe Middelkoop from The Netherlands.
The Irishman has been in fine form this week dropping just ten games in his opening two qualifying matches. He goes into his final round match as slight favourite due to his current ranking of 199 as opposed to Middelkoop’s 258.
Niland is hoping to repeat his heroics from earlier in the summer when he successfully qualified for his first Grand Slam main draw at Wimbledon.
Also in action today is Louk Sorensen.
The Irish number two plays Gastao Elias from Argentina in a second round qualifying match that was postponed from yesterday because of the inclement weather in New York.
If Sorensen comes through that match he will play his final qualifying match later this evening as he bids to qualify for his second Grand Slam event following his appearance at the Australian Open in 2010 where he reached the second round.
