Louk Sorensen has announced his retirement from professional tennis following a series of injuries in the last 16 months.

Sorensen achieved a career highlight in January 2010 in reaching the second round of the Australian Open and his ranking at that point climbed to 213.

However, since that point his career has been blighted by a series of injuries.

A knee problem suffered six weeks ago proved to be the tipping point and he has decided to call it a day.

Irish Davis Cup Captain Garry Cahill said today ‘Louk’s retirement is a huge blow for the Irish Davis Cup team.

‘Our 2011 programme requires us to play some very tough opponents and Louk’s absence from the team has been very difficult for us.

‘Louk has had a really impressive Davis Cup career to date and he is a proven match winner in international competition.

‘We acknowledge his enormous talent and while his retirement is a setback, we understand very well the huge disappointments he has suffered with injuries throughout his career.’
