Ferrer reaches US Open fourth round

Spain's David Ferrer today advanced to the fourth round of the US Open for just the second time in his career with a comfortable win over compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Ferrer, the 10th seed at Flushing Meadows, won 7-6 (7/2) 6-2 6-2 in just under two hours to set up a last-16 clash with either David Nalbandian or Fernando Verdasco.

A dominant performance on serve was the key to Ferrer's victory, the 28-year-old holding serve throughout the contest and facing just one break point on Court 11.

The last time Ferrer reached the fourth round in New York was in 2007, when he beat Rafael Nadal on his way to the semi-finals, which remains his best result in a grand slam.
