James McGee into Irish Open semis

James McGee qualified for the semi-finals of the Green Property Irish Open at the Fitzwilliam Club on Thursday, overcoming Simon Cauvard of France 6-3, 6-4.

McGee will face Daniel Cox for a place in the final on Friday at 3pm. Cox is ranked 787 in the world, compared to McGee's position of 509. Cox did, however, beat Ireland's Daniel Glancy in the second round and won a Futures tournament in England last week.

McGee's Davis Cup team-mate Colin O'Brien lost to second seed Miroslav Mecir 6-3 6-1. Mecir, whose father Miloslav won gold at the 1988 Olympics and reached the final of two grand slams, plays Andrea Falgheri in the other semi-final. Falgheri beat Xander Spong in the other quarter-final.

In the doubles, Irishmen James Cluskey and Colin O'Brien advanced to the final, where they will play Ireland's Barry King and Colin Ebelthite of Australia. The doubles final is scheduled for 5.30pm.

Meanwhile, Limerick's Sam Barry has qualified for the quarter-final of the Under-18 European Championships in Klosters, Switzerland. Barry beat Mate Pavic of Croatia in three sets. No Irish player had previously qualified for the last-eight of the European Championships. He faces Francisco Dias of Portugal on Friday.
