Glancy knocks out number one seed at Irish Open

Ireland's Daniel Glancy caused a major shock on day two of the Green Property Men's Irish Open at Fitzwilliam LTC by knocking out top seed Josh Goodall of England.

The Castlebar man, ranked 976 in the world, led by a set and was 5-1 up in the second set when Goodall, having shown no previous sign of injury, called for the trainer and retired.

At that stage, the writing was on the wall for Goodall, who is ranked 356 in the ATP World Rankings and has played in the US Open and at Wimbledon.

Glancy came from 4-1 down in the first set, reeling off 10 of the next 11 games with a suberb display of heavy hitting groundstrokes. He deservedly takes his place in the next round on Wednesday where he will play Daniel Cox.

Earlier in the day, 8th seed Colin O'Brien of Ireland enjoyed a narrow 7-5 7-6 win over Albano Olivetti of Italy. O'Brien meets Matthew Asciak in the second round. Asciak beat Carlow man Tommy Murphy 6-4 6-0 on Monday.

In the final match of the evening, which finished at 10.07pm under lights at Fitzwilliam, Ireland's Barry King beat Burnham Arlidge 5-7 7-5 7-5.

King now faces Italian number seven seed Andrea Falgheri on Court 2 at 1pm on Wednesday.

Fifth seed James McGee of Ireland is also in action on Wednesday. He will face James Ludlow of the USA

The evening match sees wildcard entry John Morrissey, fresh from his great win over Lazare Kukhalashvili on Monday night, take on Simon Cauvard of France.
