McGee wins first round Irish Open clash

James McGee has come through his first round clash at the Green Property Irish Open at Fitzwilliam Tennis Club in Dublin.

McGee was up against Matthew Barton of Australia. The fifth seed won in straight sets (6/4 6/3) to progress in the International Tennis Federation 'Futures' class event.

McGee's fellow Davis Cup team member James Cluskey went out after losing in a third set tie-break by Holland's Xander Spong.

Top Irish Junior John Morrissey, who practiced with Rafa Nadal at the French Open, won the featured evening match. He beat 19-year-old Georgian Lazare Kukhalashvili, a member of the DCU-based BNP Paribas Tennis Ireland Academy, in straight sets (6-2 6-3).

The victory means Morrissey picks up his very first point on the ATP Rankings.

Admission to the event is free all day with play starting at 11am.
