Ireland's Davis Cup team have stormed into a 2-0 lead in the first day of their Europe/Africa zone Group 2 match with Turkey at Fitzwilliam Tennis Club in Dublin.
Conor Niland produced one of the finest performances of his career to upset the form book and steamroll Marsel Ilhan 6-3 6-2 6-1. Ilhan is ranked 121 in the world to Niland's 241.
In the second singles rubber, James McGee easily defeated Haluk Akkayun 6-2 6-2 6-4.
Louk Sorensen, who progressed into the second round of this year's Australian Open, has succumbed to a hamstring injury and is likely to miss out on the tie completely.
The match continues tomorrow and Sunday, with the winner advancing to the next round to face Great Britain or Lithuania.
