Nadal & Murray through: men's round-up
Saturday, 28 June 2008Number two seed Rafael Nadal ran out an impressive 7-6 6-2 6-3 winner against Germany's Nicolas Kiefer to reach Wimbledon's fourth round in fine style.
It was level-pegging all the way in the first set until the tiebreak when one precious early break by four-times French Open champion Nadal was all that was needed to give him the lead.
The German, who has never taken a set off Nadal in their three encounters, imploded in the second when the remorseless Spaniard broke his service twice and took a commanding lead.
With the sun setting behind Centre Court, the Majorcan lefthander, runner up the last two years here, went into overdrive in the third set with some awe-inspiring power serving and superb passing shots.
The players were treated to a spontaneous Mexican wave from the Centre Court crowd after Kiefer finally broke Nadal when he was serving for the match but it was too little too late.
Murray copes with pressure and ousts Haas
Andy Murray reached the last 16 at Wimbledon on Saturday after surviving his toughest test yet against German Tommy Haas.
The 21-year-old Scot, seeded 12, came through 6-4 6-7 6-3 6-2 to move into the second week where he will face flamboyant Frenchman Richard Gasquet for a place in his first grand slam quarter-final.
Murray played sublime tennis to lead by a set and a break before Haas pounced on a temporarily lapse to level the match on a tiebreak.
Haas missed an easy volley on a break point at 1-1 in the third set when Murray was wobbling and he was made to pay in the next game when he dropped serve.
Murray seized control again and Haas hardly got a look in as the home favourite surged to victory with some dazzling tennis.
Gasquet defeats compatriot
Gasquet overcame a minor lapse in concentration to move past compatriot Gilles Simon and set up a prospective last-16 showdown with Murray.
Looking destined to sweep aside Simon in straight sets, Gasquet dropped the third on a tie-break then fell a break behind in the fourth before rallying to score a 6-3 6-3 6-7 (3/7) 6-3 success.
Roddick's conqueror Tipsarevic continues run
Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic followed his suprise second round victory over sixth seed Andy Roddick with a 7-6 7-6 6-3 win over Russia's 25th seed Dmitry Tursunov.
Fierce service games led to inevitable tiebreaks in the first two sets and it was last year's Wimbledon quarter-finalist Tipsarevic who capitalised on Tursunov's poor tiebreak serves, including a double-fault to seal the first set.
Tipsarevic produced another ace to seal a 2-0 lead and the 24-year-old, ranked 40th in the world, saw off a late Tursunov comeback to seal the third with his 13th ace of the match.
Tipsarevic, who took world number one Roger Federer to five sets before losing in this year's Australian Open, will face the experienced 32-year-old German Rainer Schuettler in the fourth round on Monday.
