Venus Williams, three times a Wimbledon winner, insists she can launch another assault on the greatest prize in tennis - even if her critics believe it would take a miracle on her current form.

She took just 51 minutes to complete a 6-2 6-2 demolition of Czech Republic rival Hana Sromova on Court One to reach the third round, looking at a possible fourth round match-up with Maria Sharapova.

But although much of her old power remains - despite a nasty wrist injury earlier this year - it would take a brave gambler to bet on her capturing the title again at the age of 26 and with her focus seemingly far from exclusively on her game.

It was an easy kill against Sromova, a qualifier ranked 170 in the world, but nobody should forget the struggle in her opening test against unknown Russian Alla Kudryaytseva when she stood on the brink of defeat before prevailing 7-5 in the third.

Fears for her survival whenever she comes up against quality opposition are obvious but she would remind you that she has been written off time and again and was the lowest seed (14) and lowest ranked woman (16) ever to win a Wimbledon crown.
