Barry Murphy could not follow up on last night’s superb bronze medal performance when he failed to progress from the 50m butterfly heats on the closing day at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Herning, Denmark.

Murphy’s 50m breaststroke bronze efforts clearly took its toll on the 28-year-old as he touched in a time of 24.26, nearly a second outside his best time and Irish record of 23.38 set earlier this year.

Ireland’s other swimmers in action today also failed to get beyond their heats with Shani Stallard completing the 400m individual medley in 5:00.33.

Bethany Carson put in a solid swim in the 200m freestyle heats and finished third in Heat 2 in a time of 1:59.84.

Brendan Hyland and Andrew Meegan finished off their championships with a 1:51.41 and 1:55.36 respectively, also in the 200m Freestyle.
