Barry Murphy completed his World Championship campaign in Barcelona today with a disappointing eighth place finish in his heat of the 50m Freestyle.

Murphy started strong but faded over the last 10 metres to clock a time of 23.13 in the sprint event finishing 43rd overall.

The Dubliner leaves the Championships with a new Irish record in the 50m Butterfly and a 14th place finish in the 50m Breaststroke following his semi-final swim on Tuesday.

Murphy will now travel to Eindhoven and Berlin to compete in the FINA Swimming World Cup which takes place next week.

Fiona Doyle will be the final Irish swimmer to compete at the World Championships tomorrow when she returns to the pool for the 50m Breaststroke heats.

Doyle was fourth at the recent World University Games in Russia in the event missing out on a bronze medal by .01 of a second, she is ranked 10th going into tomorrow’s heats.
