The Irish Women’s 4x200 metre Freestyle relay squad finished a creditable sixth in the final at the European Swimming Championships in Hungary.

The squad of Sycerika McMahon, Melanie Nocher, Nuala Murphy and Bethany Carson qualified for the final in a modest time of 8:13:30, almost six seconds outside their own Irish record, but good enough for a place in the top eight.

The quartet improved that time in the final to 8:09:15 which was initially good enough for seventh place.

However they were then elevated to sixth place with the disqualification of Spain who lost the bronze medal for an illegal takeover.

Italy took gold ahead of Hungary with Slovenia taking third place.

Fiona Doyle and Shani Stallard failed to progress from the semi finals of the Women’s 200 metres Breastroke.
