Irish swimmers fail to shine in London

Ireland’s Sycerika McMahon finished seventh in the 200 metres individual medley invitational final at the British Championships on Monday.

The 16-year-old recorded a time of two minutes 16.05 seconds. at London’s Aquatics Centre.

McMahon finished one place ahead of compatriot Grainne Murphy, who has already qualified for the Olympics, at London’s Aquatics Centre.

Murphy’s main event is the 800 freestyle, the heats of which are on Thursday morning.

Kathryn Meaklim of South Africa won gold in 2:13.50, but missed out on the Olympic qualifying time by 0.14.

Melanie Nocher finished eighth the final of the 200m freestyle in 2:01.55.

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom clocked a 2012 world leading time of 1:55.23 to win the gold.
