Grainne Murphy has finished eighth in final of the women's 400 metres freestyle at the European Short Course Swimming championships in Sczezen, Poland.

The 18-year-old Wexford woman, who was somewhat fortuitous to make the 10 swimmer decider, clocked a time of 4min 6.05secs, almost three and a half seconds outside the Irish record set she taking bronze in the event at last year’s championships in Eindhoven.

In the earlier heats Melanie Nocher, who was ahead of Murphy in qualifying, pulled out of the final to concentrate on her main event, Sunday’s 200m backstroke, which gave Murphy a place in this afternoon’s decider.

The gold medal went to Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia (3:56.39) with Lotte Friis of Denmark in silver and another Spanish swimmer, Melanie Costa Schmid, taking bronze.
