World records fall in Istanbul

Two world records fell on the opening night of finals at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Istanbul, writes RTÉ Sport's John Kenny.

Evelyn Verraszto of Hungary broke her own women's 200 metre Individual Medley (IM) world record, while the Russian men's squad did likewise in the final of the 4x50 metres medley relay.

Verraszto obliterated the world best she set herself only a month ago at the World Cup meet in Moscow as the 20-year-old set the 236th world record broke since the introduction of the controversial polyurethane suit two years ago, clocking a time of 2:04.64 - almost one and half seconds off the record she set in the Russian capital in November.

The second world record of the night went to the Russian 4x50 metres medley relay team who won gold in 1.31.80, a second off the old time with Germany in silver and France in bronze.
