Gold, silver and bronze for Ireland

Twin sisters Fiona and Eimear Doyle (NPC-UL / Limerick) have taken a gold, silver and bronze at the first day of the British Youth and Open Swimming Championships in Sheffield, England.

Fiona raced to the gold medal in the Girls 14 & 15 yrs 100 Breast final with a time of 1:13.27, while sister Eimear took the silver in the same event in 1:13.67. 

At 15 years old, the Doyles were the youngest in the Open Final and were well ahead of the field.

Earlier in the final session, Fiona Doyle swam to a bronze medal in the Girls 14 & 15 100 Freestyle with a 58.18.  Both girls resume racing on Monday 30 July.

Bethany Carson (Lisburn) had two finals swims on day one, placing seventh in the Girls 14 & 15 yrs 100 Free with personal best of 59.85.  The time was .02 better than her heat time, which was also a personal best. 

Carson also swam the 400 IM placing 6th in a time of 5:07.74.  Her heat swim was a personal best.

Andrew Meegan (Aer Lingus) posted a personal best in the Boys 17 & 18 age group, placing 5th with a 4:02.

Colm Dowling (New Ross) was also in action improving to a 7th in the Boys 17 & 18 100 Back Final in a personal best of 1:00.13

The 24 member team representing Ireland include members of the 2012 identification squad, and swimmers that recently competed at the Junior European Championships in Antwerp and the European Youth Olympics in Belgrade.
