Ireland remain 70th as Germany top rankings

New world champions and Republic of Ireland Euro 2016 qualification opponents Germany climb one spot to lead the table for the first time in around 20 years, followed by Argentina, up three places to second and Netherlands in third.

Netherlands climbed 12 places thanks to their strong, third-place finish in the competition, and there are also improvements for Colombia (fourth, up four), Belgium (fifth, up six), France (tenth, up seven) and Costa Rica (16th, their highest ever ranking, up 12).

Spain's disastrous disastrous group-stage exit from the World Cup is reflected in a drop down the rankings from first to eighth. Italy (from ninth to 14th) and Portugal (fourth to 1th) also fell.

England's tame exit means they drop ten spots to 20th over all.

World Cup Brazil drop four place to seventh position following their humiliating finish to a disappointing tournament.

Scotland, also in Ireland's Euro 2016 group, meanwhile remain 27th in the rankings and Northern Ireland rise one spot to 89th.

Ireland open their qualification campaign away to Georgia on 7 September.
